TMC’s Dual-Interface Financial IC Card Chip Takes Lead in Passing International CC EAL5+ Certification

(20 April 2016, Hong Kong) On April 20, 2016, Beijing Tongfang Microelectronics (“TMC”) hosted the CC EAL5+ awarding ceremony at the international lecture hall of Tower C, Tsinghua Tongfang Hi-Tech Plaza, at which Kjartan, the certifier of SERTIT, officially issued the CC EAL5+ certification to TMC’s President Duan Li. This indicates that THD88/M2064 (“THD88”), a dual-interface financial card IC independently developed by TMC becomes China’s first chip getting this certification. This historical moment was witnessed by more than 300 people, including officials from Unigroup Guoxin Co., Ltd (the former Tongfang Guoxin Electronics Co Ltd), representatives from the Norway SERTIT, Netherland-based Brightsight Lab and over 30 partners, as well as TMC employees.

China’s Sole Chip Passing the International CC EAL5+ Certification

The international CC EAL5+ certification obtained by the new-generation THD88 represents TMC’s another important breakthrough in security chips for financial IC cards following its CC EAL4+ certificate at the end of December 2015. Compared with the CC EAL4+ testing standards, the CC EAL5+ has higher security requirements and stricter testing standards. Currently THD88 is the world’s only security chip that boasts of the CC EAL5+ Certificate, China UnionPay Card Chip Security Certificate and the OSCCA Level 2 Certificate. TMC is China’s only security chip designer getting the CC EAL5+ certification. Ren Zhijun, President of Unigroup Guoxin, said: “The fact that TMC’s THD88 chip passes the CC EAL5+ certification is a landmark of the local chip market and boosts the morale of local IC designers.”

At the awarding ceremony, Mr. Wang Yu, Executive Director and President of Hua Hong Semiconductor Limited, and TMC jointly announced that the two companies will continue their strategic partnership in the financial IC card chip field to provide the global markets with financial IC card chips "indigenously innovated to deliver security and controllability”.

Chinese “Chips” Go Globally

At the awarding ceremony, Ding Yimin, TMC’s Vice President, reviewed TMC’s evolution in financial security chips. From the CC EAL4+ to the CC EAL5+, TMC gradually narrows the gaps between Chinese “chips” and international “chips” in such indicators as performance, security and reliability. Meanwhile, it is leading the Chinese security chips to go globally with China UnionPay’s strategic presence in the world. It is learned that THD88 has not only been used by many domestic commercial banks for card issuing but also successfully entered the overseas financial IC card market. This chip is used in the first China UnionPay cards issued by banks in UAE and Dubai, laying a good foundation for Chinese “chips” to expand domestic and overseas financial IC card markets.

Zhang Kaifan, VP of Netherland-based Brightsight Lab, said: “It’s a great pleasure to see that a Chinese enterprise obtain this certification. TMC’s outstanding professionalism is proven during the certification. We think that TMC is now in a world leading position in this aspect. To drive the technology upgrade, we’ll continue strict control of the product certificate process so as to ensure the security quality in this industry.”

Regarding the CC EAL5+ certification, Duan Li, TMCs President, said: “It’s a great pleasure that our THD88 chip passes the international CC EAL5+ security certification. Security is our top concern for financial IC chips. We have a professional chip security team of over 80 members. After many years of efforts, our THD86 became the first dual-interface chip in 2013 passing the China UnionPay card chip security certification; TDH88 obtained the China UnionPay Card Chip Security Certification, the OSCCA Level 2 Certification and the CC EAL4+ Security Certification in 2015. The CC EAL5+ certificate represents the most powerful affirmation to TMC’s financial IC card chips in security. Looking to the future, we’re expecting that TMC’s financial IC card chips to shine in the international markets hence making “Chinese chips” widely used in the world.”
